Plan details checked September 25, 2026 on each vendor's own site. US dollars, before tax. Vendors change plans and promotions often, so confirm before you buy.

A social media management tool lets a small team plan, schedule and answer posts across several networks from one place, instead of logging in to each app. The tools below price in very different ways (per channel, per user, per seat or per bundle), so the headline number can mislead. This guide covers five widely used options, starting with the free plans, and ends with a short method for choosing.

How this guide was built: it draws on each vendor's own pricing page. We have not hands-on tested every product, so we give no ratings or scores. Where a page doesn't state something, we say so instead of guessing.

1. Start with the free plans

Buffer. The Free plan is free forever for up to 3 channels and 1 user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel that refill as they go out. It includes an AI Assistant, basic Insights and a community inbox.

HubSpot. Marketing Hub has a Free plan for up to 2 users, with no credit card required. Note that HubSpot lists its social media tool as a Professional feature, so the free plan is a way to try HubSpot's marketing tools, not its social publishing.

Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Later don't offer free plans on their pricing pages. They offer free trials instead (see below).

2. Paid plans, tool by tool

Buffer. Buffer charges per channel. Essentials is $5 per channel per month ($60 billed yearly) for 1 user, with unlimited scheduled posts, advanced analytics, a hashtag manager and first-comment scheduling. Team is $10 per channel per month ($120 billed yearly) and adds unlimited team members, approval workflows, custom access and permissions, and branded reports. Both paid plans have a 14-day free trial.

Later. Later sells "social sets," each covering one profile on each supported network (8 profiles in total). Billed yearly, Starter is $18.75 a month for 1 social set, 1 user and up to 30 posts per profile per month. Growth is $37.50 a month for 2 social sets, 2 users, 180 posts per profile, collaboration and approvals, and a social inbox. Scale is $82.50 a month for 6 social sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, custom analytics and competitive benchmarking. Extra users are $3.75 a month each and extra social sets are $11.25 a month each. There is a 14-day free trial.

Hootsuite. Hootsuite charges per user, billed annually. Standard is $99 per user per month and manages up to 10 social accounts, with unlimited scheduling, AI post and image generation, a single inbox, and brand and competitor monitoring. Professional is $199 and adds unlimited social accounts, inbox automation and custom reports. Advanced is $399 and adds content approvals and message routing for teams. Enterprise is custom-priced. There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card, and Hootsuite says trial accounts have daily posting limits of 10 to 20 posts per organization.

Sprout Social. Sprout charges per seat, billed annually. Essentials is $79 per seat per month ($99 billed monthly). Standard is $199 per seat per month with 5 social profiles, a consolidated inbox, keyword and location monitoring, and review management. Professional is $299 and adds unlimited profiles, message tagging and competitor insights. Advanced is $399 and adds sentiment analysis, the Sprout API and helpdesk integrations. Enterprise is custom-priced. There is a 30-day free trial with no credit card.

HubSpot Marketing Hub. HubSpot lists social media under Marketing Hub Professional, which starts at $800 a month billed annually ($890 billed monthly) and includes 3 core seats. Additional core seats start at $45 a month. Watch the footnote: the price excludes a required one-time onboarding fee of $3,000. Marketing Hub Starter is $7 per seat per month billed annually or $20 billed monthly, and covers email marketing, simple automation and ad management, but its feature list doesn't include the social tool. Professional makes sense if you also want HubSpot's email, automation and CRM in the same system. For CRM options, see our CRM comparison.

Watch the extras

  • Pricing basis: Buffer charges per channel, Later per social set, Hootsuite per user, Sprout per seat and HubSpot Professional per bundle of 3 seats. Count your channels and your people before comparing.
  • Onboarding fees: HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional requires a one-time $3,000 onboarding fee.
  • Posting caps: Buffer's Free plan allows 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, and Later's Starter plan allows 30 posts per profile per month.
  • Promotions: HubSpot's marketing pricing page advertises special Starter pricing for new customers only, with select offers for a limited time. Check what the price becomes when an offer ends.
  • Billing basis: most of these prices assume annual billing. Compare monthly and annual on the same footing.

How to choose

  1. Start free or with a trial. Buffer's free plan covers 3 channels, and Sprout's 30-day trial is the longest of the five.
  2. Count channels and users first. A solo owner with many channels and a team of five with two channels will find different tools cheapest.
  3. Decide whether you need an inbox and approvals. Scheduling alone is cheap. Shared inboxes, approvals and listening are where prices climb.
  4. Add up the whole first-year cost. Include onboarding fees, extra users and the end of any promotion.
  5. Test with a real week of posts. Load your actual content calendar during the trial.

Quick math for a 3-person team posting to 5 channels, at each page's displayed annual price:

  • Buffer Team: 5 channels × $10 = $50 a month, with unlimited team members.
  • Later Growth: $37.50 plus 1 extra user at $3.75 = $41.25 a month (2 social sets cover up to 16 profiles).
  • Hootsuite Standard: 3 users × $99 = $297 a month.
  • Sprout Social Standard: 3 seats × $199 = $597 a month (Essentials would be 3 × $79 = $237).
  • HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional: $800 a month for 3 core seats, plus the $3,000 one-time onboarding fee.

Treat these as list-price comparisons. Features differ widely between these plans, so the cheapest one may not cover what your team needs.
